Comedian Bill Murray’s Wallet Hacked For $186K Worth Of Ethereum

On September 1st, 2022, approximately 119.2 ether (ETH) tokens were drained from the wallet of American comedian and actor, Bill Murray.

This was after he had conducted a charity auction related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). As per statistics, most of the NFTs and tokens in the wallet have been moved and tokens worth $556 are left behind.

Wallet compromised

Best known for his appearances on The National Lampoon Radio Hour and Saturday Night Live, Bill Murray saw his wallet attacked last Thursday and 119.2 Ethereum tokens stolen.

The popular comedian and actor’s team disclosed that the incident had taken place on Thursday evening at about 7:00 p.m.

After the hacked account, his account was left with $556 worth of NFTs and tokens left. The report indicated that a big portion of the comedian’s portfolio had been taken out of the compromised wallet.

According to onchain data, his security team had removed a number of blockchain assets.

These include Pudgy Penguins, Veerfriends, Cryptotoads, Damien Hirst NFTs, Cryptopunks, Gutter Cat Gang, Deadfellaz, Adam Bomb Squad, The Flower Girl NFTs, Hashmasks, and Boss Beauties.

The auction

The funds that were in the wallet had been raised through an auction of an NFT that had been part of the ‘Bill Murray 1000’ NFT collection.

This was hosted on the non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace on the Coinbase exchange. According to Murray’s team, the funds that were stolen were transferred to an exchange and the identity of the thief is unknown.

The funds that were raised through the auction of the NFT had been meant for donation to a non-profit organization called Chive Charities.

They were to assist in the treatment of a 3-year old girl with an uncommon genetic mutation that resulted in unsolvable epilepsy.

According to a report, the runner-up in the auction had made a donation to Chive Charities of 120 ether for replacing the funds that were siphoned off.

No details

It should be noted that no details were shared about how the hacker had managed to compromise Murray’s wallet and siphon off the 119.2 ether tokens.

The comedian’s team said that they had also reached out to law enforcement to file a report and disclosed that they were also working with blockchain intelligence firm, Chainalysis.

The goal is to investigate how the hack was carried out and to identify the perpetrators behind it. The findings showed that the attackers had also tried to eliminate NFTs that were part of the comedian’s private library.

However, the safety initiatives in this regard had proven to be quite effective in keeping them out. Nonetheless, they still managed to steal tokens worth $186,000 at the time of writing.

Moreover, it should also be noted that Bill Murray is not the only high-profile celebrity who was the victim of crypto hackers.

Seth Green, the Family Guy star, also suffered, as his Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT was stolen and he got the NFT back after paying for it.
